About Social Security
The Dove Society will take care of notifying Social Security of the death of your loved one. However, you will need to file for any Social Security benefits for which your family may be eligible. To file just telephone Social Security at the number listed below.
Burial Payment
In some cases, when a worker, who has paid into Social Security for a number of years, passes away, a one lump sum payment of $255.00 is made to the eligible survivor. This payment is made to the eligible survivor in the following order:
1. To the surviving widow/widower who was living with the worker at the time of the death,
2. To the surviving widow/widower not living with the worker at the time of death if he/she is entitled to a benefit on the account at the time of death, or
3. To surviving children eligible for benefits on the account at the time of death.
Monthly Survivor Payment
Monthly benefits may be applicable for any of the children of the deceased that are unmarried and under age 19 at the time of death. This includes natural, adopted and/or stepchildren. You may also be eligible for monthly benefits if you are the widow or widower of the deceased, the deceased worked under Social Security covered employment, and you meet any of the three requirements shown below:
